Playing VQFs:
Mac: Get the yamaha player here .
Windoze: The best two players are winamp with the VQF plugin, or
kjofol. To use winamp, get the actual winamp program from http://www.winamp.com (either the full or
basis version will do) and the full plugin
here.
Unzip the plugin into winamp\plugins, restart winamp, and you're good to go.
Kjofol comes with built-in support, so just download the player from
http://www.kjofol.org
and you're set.
Linux: There's no native support for vqf's in linux, but some people have
had success running an emu and using winamp or kjofol under that. If
anyone gets this to work and has tips or details, feel free to pass them
along.
Linux Update:
From www.vqf.com:
"Yes, A VQF Player for Linux does exist. MVQFPlayer
is gross hack to get VQF's to play under Linux and was intended as a Proof of
Concept for writing a plugin for XMMS. It uses WineLIB to initilase the mp3 and
VQF plugins used by WinAMP."
Encoding VQFs:
You need the Yamaha encoder, which you can download from us
here. To encode a single song, hit
the Browse button to the left of where it reads "SOURCE" to select your .wav file. Then
set the
"encode mode" to 48/44, instead of the default 40/44, and set "high
quality". Fill in the artist name, song title, and copyright info however
you like. When you've got everything set, hit the Encode button and it'll
start.
You can also use the encoder to do batch encodes, which means queuing up
multiple files to be automatically encoded one after another. To do this,
run the encoder, and run windows explorer or something similar where you
can see all your wav files to be encoded. Highlight the wav's all
together, and drag and drop them onto the encoder window. A batch wizard
will pop up for you to fill out; it should be fairly self-explanatory.
It can be useful to check the "Use filename as title" box next to "TITLE" to
have the batch encode automatically fill in the title for each track when
it encodes. You can either hit "Auto-encode", or "OK" to
step through each file to be encoded. You must fill in the spaces for
author, copyright, and comment, or you will be prompted to do so if you try to start
encoding with that information.
Decoding VQFs:
Windows:
You can decode VQFs to waves with winamp - just right click on winamp and go to:
options->preferences->output plugins and set to disk writer.
Then playing the file will produce the .wav file.
Mac:
Unfortunately, there currently does not seem to be a way to decode for
Macs.
CD-R Burning Support:
Nero version 5.0 (released May 2000) supports VQF encoding, as well as on-the-fly burning of
audio CDs from VQF, so you can create audio CDs without the hassle of decompressing to .wav files
first. Visit Nero's site for more details on
Nero's features and purchasing instructions.
